North Goa (Baga & Calangute), Goa

The nightlife lane in Baga, clubs stacked along a couple of hundred metres. Loud and expensive, and the crowd it pulls is the crowd it pulls. Goa has a legal cut-off on amplified music outdoors at ten, which pushes everything indoors after that.

Tosh Valley Viewpoint

Tosh, Himachal Pradesh

The upper edge of the village, looking up the Parvati to the glaciers at its head. Tosh is the last road head in the valley and the walk out to the view takes about fifteen minutes.

Triveni Ghat

Rishikesh, Uttarakhand

The main bathing ghat in Rishikesh town, and where the evening aarti happens. Smaller and less performed than Haridwar's, and much easier to sit through.

Tsomgo (Changu) Lake

Tsomgo Lake & Nathula Pass, Sikkim

An oval lake at about 3,750 metres, held sacred locally and frozen over in winter. Yaks are brought down to the shore for photographs, at a price agreed before you sit on one. Permits are checked at the barrier below.

Tungnath Temple

Chopta (Tungnath), Uttarakhand

The highest Shiva temple in the world at around 3,680 metres, and the third of the Panch Kedar. Three and a half kilometres of paved but steep path up from Chopta. Shuts for winter around November.

Nubra Valley, Leh & Ladakh

A beautiful, authentic Balti culture village opened to tourists recently, located just kilometers away from the Line of Control.

Chopta (Tungnath), Uttarakhand

The winter seat of the Kedarnath deity, twenty-nine kilometres down the valley. From November to April the idol is worshipped here instead, which makes this the place to come in the months the high temples are closed.

Dawki & Mawlynnong, Meghalaya

The famously transparent river where boats appear to float on air; popular for boat rides and riverside camping.

Kevadia (Ekta Nagar), Gujarat

A landscaped garden of about twenty-four hectares along the Narmada below the Statue of Unity — planted rather than wild, and not to be confused with the national park of the same name in Uttarakhand.

The one temple in Hampi that never stopped functioning, with a fifty-metre gopuram over the bazaar street. The temple elephant is walked down to the river to be washed each morning, which is worth getting up for.

Hampi, Karnataka

The stone chariot is a Garuda shrine rather than a vehicle, and its wheels once turned. The musical pillars in the hall are now roped off — too many people struck them. Come at opening; this is the most visited thing in Hampi.

A protected dry deciduous forest range popular for open jeep tracking tours to spot wild Asian elephant herds.

Zarwani Waterfall

Kevadia (Ekta Nagar), Gujarat

Inside the Shoolpaneshwar sanctuary a short drive from Kevadia, and it only runs properly during and just after the monsoon. There is an eco-campsite at the bottom and a short walk in.
