Machi Fort and Gateways

Attraction

Machi Fort and Gateways

Pavagadh Hill, Gujarat

The medieval military fortification structures guarding the central hill plateau. It features stone walls, watchtowers, and ancient deep water harvesting cisterns carved directly out of the volcanic rock.

Madhuban Temple Town

Attraction

Madhuban Temple Town

Shikharji (Parasnath), Jharkhand

The base settlement of Jain temples and dharamshalas below the hill.

Mahabat Maqbara Complex

Attraction

Mahabat Maqbara Complex

Junagadh, Gujarat

Two mausoleums side by side, finished in 1892 and 1896: one for Mahabat Khan II, Nawab of Junagadh, the other for his minister Bahauddin Hussain Bhar. What makes them worth the detour is the mix — Indo-Islamic domes and arches carrying Gothic windows, silver doors, and four minarets with staircases winding up the outside of them, which is close to unique in India. They have been poorly maintained for years and are often locked; the exterior is the visit, and it is enough. Late afternoon light suits the stonework better than midday.

Mahabodhi Temple & Bodhi Tree

Attraction

Mahabodhi Temple & Bodhi Tree

Bodh Gaya, Bihar

The UNESCO temple beside the tree under which the Buddha was enlightened.

Mahakaleshwar Temple

Attraction

Mahakaleshwar Temple

Mahaparinirvana Temple

Attraction

Houses a 6-metre reclining statue of the dying Buddha.

Mahatma Gandhi Marg

The high-ceilinged marble chamber housing the cenotaphs of Mumtaz Mahal and Shah Jahan, enclosed by a finely carved lattice screen.

Majuli Satras

Attraction

Majuli Satras

Majuli, Assam

Centuries-old Neo-Vaishnavite monasteries preserving dance, chanting and manuscript traditions.

Mall Road

Market

Mall Road

Shimla, Himachal Pradesh

No vehicles allowed, which is why Shimla still works as a walking town. The Gaiety Theatre from 1887 is still in use, and Scandal Point at the far end is where the Mall meets the Ridge.

Mandvi Shipbuilding Yard

Experience

Mandvi Shipbuilding Yard

Mandvi Beach (Kutch), Gujarat

Where traditional wooden dhows are still hand-built.

Mandvi Shoreline

Viewpoint

Mandvi Shoreline

Mandvi Beach (Kutch), Gujarat

A wide golden beach with wind turbines behind it and camel rides along the sand. The shipyard at the creek, where wooden dhows are still built by hand, is the more interesting half of Mandvi.

Manek Chowk

Market

Manek Chowk

Ahmedabad, Gujarat

A jewellery bazaar by day and a famous street-food hub by night.

Marina Promenade

Viewpoint

Marina Promenade

Marina Beach (Chennai), Tamil Nadu

The long seafront walk lined with statues and food stalls.

Marine Drive

Viewpoint

Marine Drive

Mumbai, Maharashtra

Three and a half kilometres of seafront reclaimed in the 1920s, with a row of Art Deco flats behind it that is UNESCO-listed. Walk it after six, when the rest of the city is doing the same. The concrete blocks on the sea side are tetrapods, and people sit on them despite the risk.

Matanga Hill

Viewpoint

Matanga Hill

Hampi, Karnataka

The highest geographic point in the ruins, accessible via a steep stepped trail and famous for panoramic sunset views over the entire stone landscape.

Mattancherry Palace

Attraction

Mattancherry Palace

Kochi (Fort Kochi), Kerala

A historic palace built by the Portuguese and renovated by the Dutch, housing rare multi-century old murals detailing the Ramayana.

Mehrangarh Fort

Attraction

Mehrangarh Fort

Jodhpur, Rajasthan

Founded around 1459 by Rao Jodha of the Rathore clan, though most of what stands is seventeenth-century work by his successors — a hundred and twenty metres above the city, spread across twelve hundred acres. Seven gates lead in: Jai Pol was built by Man Singh to mark victories over Jaipur and Bikaner in 1806, Fattehpol commemorates Ajit Singh's victory over the Mughals. Inside are palace courtyards, the Chamunda Mataji temple and a museum of the Jodhpur royal collection. Kipling called it a palace built by titans; what it actually gives you is the clearest view there is of the blue houses below.

Mehtab Bagh

Viewpoint

Mehtab Bagh

Agra, Uttar Pradesh

A Mughal garden across the river from the Taj, laid out as the fourth side of its plan and buried in silt for centuries before being dug out. Worth an hour on its own, not just as a viewpoint.

Mehtab Bagh Overlook

Viewpoint

Mehtab Bagh Overlook

Taj Mahal (Agra), Uttar Pradesh

The far bank of the Yamuna, directly on the Taj's axis, and where the sunset photograph is taken from. The river between is often a trickle rather than the mirror in the pictures. Separate small ticket.

Meshwo River and Shyam Sarovar

Viewpoint

Meshwo River and Shyam Sarovar

Shamlaji, Gujarat

The river and reservoir immediately behind the temple, with stone bathing ghats along the bank. Full of bathers on festival days and very quiet the rest of the time.

Minicoy Lighthouse

Viewpoint

Minicoy Lighthouse

Minicoy Island, Lakshadweep

A historic British-era lighthouse with views over the lagoon.

Modhera Sun Temple

Attraction

Modhera Sun Temple

Mehsana, Gujarat

An eleventh-century temple to Surya on the bank of the Pushpavati, built under Bhima I and Karna I of the Chaulukya dynasty. It has not been used for worship for a very long time and is a protected monument under the Archaeological Survey of India, which is why you can walk through all of it. Three parts: the shrine hall, the assembly hall in front of it, and the kunda — a stepped tank with small shrines set into every tier, running down to the water. The carving on the exteriors and pillars is the reason to come, and the tank is the reason to come early.
