Monastery Kitchen

Experience

Monastery Kitchen

Key Monastery, Himachal Pradesh

The traditional wood-fired kitchen where friendly lamas prepare hot butter tea and local barley meals for visitors.

Mulagandha Kuti Vihara

Experience

Mulagandha Kuti Vihara

Sarnath, Uttar Pradesh

Built in 1931, with wall paintings by the Japanese artist Kosetsu Nosu that took him years to finish. The Bodhi tree outside was grown from a cutting of the one at Anuradhapura, which came from Bodh Gaya. The relics are shown once a year.

Mysore Palace (Amba Vilas)

Attraction

Mysore Palace (Amba Vilas)

Mysuru (Mysore Palace), Karnataka

The grand three-story royal palace featuring intricately carved mahogany ceilings, stained-glass pavilions, and rare weapon museums.

Nakki Lake

Experience

Nakki Lake

Mount Abu, Rajasthan

The lake at the centre of Rajasthan's only hill station, up in the Aravallis, and the reason Mount Abu gets called an oasis in the desert — a plateau twenty-two kilometres long carrying rivers, waterfalls and evergreen forest, in a state that has very little of any of them. Pedal boats go out from the shore and the walk around the water is the town's evening ritual. The rock formations on the ridge above have collected names over the years; Toad Rock is the one everybody photographs. The lake is treated as sacred, so it is a place to walk around rather than swim in.

Nalanda University Ruins

Attraction

Nalanda University Ruins

Nalanda, Bihar

The vast UNESCO-listed red-brick remains of the ancient university.

Namgyal Institute of Tibetology

Attraction

Namgyal Institute of Tibetology

Gangtok, Sikkim

Founded in 1958, holding one of the largest collections of Tibetan manuscripts outside Tibet along with thangkas and ritual bronzes. Quiet enough to take your time in; check the day's opening hours before making the trip.

Narayan-Nagini Temple

Attraction

Narayan-Nagini Temple

Kalpa (Kinnaur), Himachal Pradesh

Kinnauri kath-kuni construction — alternating courses of timber and dry stone, which is what keeps these buildings up through earthquakes. Photography inside is usually not allowed, and visitors are sometimes asked not to enter the sanctum.

Nata Mandir (Dance Hall)

Attraction

Nata Mandir (Dance Hall)

Konark Sun Temple, Odisha

An elevated columned stone structure standing before the main hall, carpeted entirely with fine reliefs of classical musicians and dancers.

National Camel Research Farm

Experience

National Camel Research Farm

Bikaner, Rajasthan

A government research farm rather than an attraction, open only in the afternoon. Four Indian camel breeds are kept here, and the kiosk sells camel-milk ice cream, which is what everyone actually remembers.

National Orchid and Cultural Park

Attraction

National Orchid and Cultural Park

Kaziranga National Park, Assam

A local bio-park located near the gate, hosting hundreds of rare native orchid species, traditional loom exhibits, and Assam folk dances.

National Salt Satyagraha Memorial

Attraction

National Salt Satyagraha Memorial

Navsari, Gujarat

Fifteen acres at Dandi marking where the Salt March ended on 5 April 1930 and Gandhi broke the British salt monopoly by boiling seawater. It cost about ₹89 crore and opened in 2019: a path lined with statues of the marchers who walked the full distance from Sabarmati, and salt pans worked by solar evaporation, so the act itself is repeated rather than described. It is a memorial rather than a museum, and it lands better if you have been to Sabarmati Ashram first — that is where the walk started.

Naulakha Palace

Attraction

Naulakha Palace

Gondal, Gujarat

The oldest surviving palace in Gondal, dating to 1748 and the reign of Haloji Sagramji, inside the Darbargadh fort complex. The name means nine lakh — what it cost to build. Carved jharokha balconies, a pillared courtyard, delicately cut arches and a spiral staircase that is the thing most people photograph. The durbar hall is lit by chandeliers and still holds gilt wooden furniture, antique mirrors and stuffed panthers, which age badly as a display. The private museum keeps the silver caskets sent to Maharaja Bhagwat Sinhji for his silver jubilee.

Nilachal Hill Overlook

Viewpoint

Nilachal Hill Overlook

Kamakhya Temple, Assam

The edge of the hill just past the temple, looking down on the Brahmaputra as it bends around Guwahati. Two minutes from the queue, and almost nobody walks over to it.

Nilgiri Mountain Railway

Experience

Nilgiri Mountain Railway

Ooty (Udhagamandalam), Tamil Nadu

The historic UNESCO World Heritage steam toy train that winds scenic tracks across deep gorges, high bridges, and dark pine valleys.

Nishat Bagh

Attraction

Nishat Bagh

Srinagar (Dal Lake), Jammu & Kashmir

A grand 12-terraced Mughal garden flanking the lake, featuring ancient chinar trees and cascading stone water channels.

Padmini Palace

Attraction

Padmini Palace

Chittorgarh Fort, Rajasthan

The historic lakeside palace structure built for Queen Padmini, featuring white walls enclosed beautifully by a water moat reservoir.

Palli Arai Night Ritual

Experience

Palli Arai Night Ritual

Madurai (Meenakshi Amman Temple), Tamil Nadu

The highly sacred nightly closing procession where the silver idol of Lord Sundareswarar is carried to the chamber of Goddess Meenakshi.

Pancha Rathas

Attraction

Pancha Rathas

Mahabalipuram, Tamil Nadu

Five temples cut from one granite ridge in the seventh century, each in a different form — the carvers appear to have been working through the possibilities. None was finished, and the Pandava names were attached long afterwards.

Panchpula

Attraction

Panchpula

Dalhousie, Himachal Pradesh

A scenic picnic spot featuring natural water springs, cascading waterfalls, and a monument dedicated to freedom fighter Sardar Ajit Singh.

Paradesi Synagogue & Jew Town

Market

Paradesi Synagogue & Jew Town

Kochi (Fort Kochi), Kerala

The historic old Jewish quarter featuring a 16th-century synagogue decorated with hand-painted Chinese porcelain tiles and lined with antique shops.

Parshvanatha Temple

Attraction

Parshvanatha Temple

Khajuraho, Madhya Pradesh

The largest structure inside the Eastern Group of Jain temples, famous for delicate sandstone sculptures.

Patwon-ki-Haveli

Attraction

Patwon-ki-Haveli

Jaisalmer, Rajasthan

A cluster of five historic merchant mansions exhibiting incredibly fine honey-colored stone lattice window screens and painted ceiling murals.

Periyar Lake Boat Cruise

Experience

Periyar Lake Boat Cruise

Thekkady (Periyar), Kerala

The reserve's primary safari option, utilizing large passenger boats to track wildlife along the winding lake branches.

Porbandar Chowpati Beach

Attraction

Porbandar Chowpati Beach

Porbandar, Gujarat

A city beach with a paved promenade and a line of food carts, which is what most people actually come for — sunset, then bhajiya. Kirti Mandir, at Gandhi's birthplace, is a short walk inland.
