Naini Lake

Experience

Naini Lake

Nainital, Uttarakhand

The town's central lake, famous for boating and the lakeside Mall.

Nakki Lake

Experience

Nakki Lake

Mount Abu, Rajasthan

The lake at the centre of Rajasthan's only hill station, up in the Aravallis, and the reason Mount Abu gets called an oasis in the desert — a plateau twenty-two kilometres long carrying rivers, waterfalls and evergreen forest, in a state that has very little of any of them. Pedal boats go out from the shore and the walk around the water is the town's evening ritual. The rock formations on the ridge above have collected names over the years; Toad Rock is the one everybody photographs. The lake is treated as sacred, so it is a place to walk around rather than swim in.

Namgyal Institute of Tibetology

Attraction

Namgyal Institute of Tibetology

Gangtok, Sikkim

Founded in 1958, holding one of the largest collections of Tibetan manuscripts outside Tibet along with thangkas and ritual bronzes. Quiet enough to take your time in; check the day's opening hours before making the trip.

National Salt Satyagraha Memorial

Attraction

National Salt Satyagraha Memorial

Navsari, Gujarat

Fifteen acres at Dandi marking where the Salt March ended on 5 April 1930 and Gandhi broke the British salt monopoly by boiling seawater. It cost about ₹89 crore and opened in 2019: a path lined with statues of the marchers who walked the full distance from Sabarmati, and salt pans worked by solar evaporation, so the act itself is repeated rather than described. It is a memorial rather than a museum, and it lands better if you have been to Sabarmati Ashram first — that is where the walk started.

Naulakha Palace

Attraction

Naulakha Palace

Gondal, Gujarat

The oldest surviving palace in Gondal, dating to 1748 and the reign of Haloji Sagramji, inside the Darbargadh fort complex. The name means nine lakh — what it cost to build. Carved jharokha balconies, a pillared courtyard, delicately cut arches and a spiral staircase that is the thing most people photograph. The durbar hall is lit by chandeliers and still holds gilt wooden furniture, antique mirrors and stuffed panthers, which age badly as a display. The private museum keeps the silver caskets sent to Maharaja Bhagwat Sinhji for his silver jubilee.

Neer Garh Waterfall

Experience

Neer Garh Waterfall

Rishikesh, Uttarakhand

Six kilometres up the Badrinath road, then about a kilometre on foot from the gate. Full during and after the monsoon, a trickle by April. Small entry fee.

Nilgiri Mountain Railway

Experience

Nilgiri Mountain Railway

Ooty (Udhagamandalam), Tamil Nadu

The historic UNESCO World Heritage steam toy train that winds scenic tracks across deep gorges, high bridges, and dark pine valleys.

Nishat Bagh

Attraction

Nishat Bagh

Srinagar (Dal Lake), Jammu & Kashmir

A grand 12-terraced Mughal garden flanking the lake, featuring ancient chinar trees and cascading stone water channels.

North Cliff Ledge

Viewpoint

North Cliff Ledge

Varkala Beach, Kerala

The paved path along the cliff top, cafes on one side and a long drop on the other. Sections have been fenced off after collapses and the fencing moves — take it seriously. Steps down to the beach at either end.

Pancha Rathas

Attraction

Pancha Rathas

Mahabalipuram, Tamil Nadu

Five temples cut from one granite ridge in the seventh century, each in a different form — the carvers appear to have been working through the possibilities. None was finished, and the Pandava names were attached long afterwards.

Panchpula

Attraction

Panchpula

Dalhousie, Himachal Pradesh

A scenic picnic spot featuring natural water springs, cascading waterfalls, and a monument dedicated to freedom fighter Sardar Ajit Singh.

Papanasam Beach

Attraction

Papanasam Beach

Varkala Beach, Kerala

The golden sand stretch below the cliffs, popular for swimming, surfing, and historic ritual sunset cleansing baths.

Paradesi Synagogue & Jew Town

Market

Paradesi Synagogue & Jew Town

Kochi (Fort Kochi), Kerala

The historic old Jewish quarter featuring a 16th-century synagogue decorated with hand-painted Chinese porcelain tiles and lined with antique shops.

Pillar Rocks Viewpoint

Viewpoint

Pillar Rocks Viewpoint

Kodaikanal, Tamil Nadu

Three granite pillars standing about a hundred and twenty metres, side by side. The viewpoint is fenced and ticketed. Like everything on this ridge it is either remarkable or completely white with fog.

Police Bazaar & Laitumkhrah Cafes

Food

Police Bazaar & Laitumkhrah Cafes

Shillong, Meghalaya

The buzzing market and cafe districts at the heart of Shillong's food and music scene.

Prem Mandir

Attraction

Prem Mandir

Mathura & Vrindavan, Uttar Pradesh

A vast white-marble temple in Vrindavan, floodlit in colour after dark, which is when everyone comes. Built by a modern sect rather than an old one, and it looks it.

Promenade Beach

Viewpoint

Promenade Beach

Pondicherry (Puducherry), Puducherry

The seafront promenade, a popular spot for morning walks and sunrise by the Bay of Bengal.

Pul Kanjari Heritage Site

Hidden Gem

Pul Kanjari Heritage Site

Wagah Border, Punjab

A historic multi-century old fortified trading post built by Maharaja Ranjit Singh, located 6 km from the border lines.

Punnamada Lake Track

Viewpoint

Punnamada Lake Track

Alleppey (Backwaters), Kerala

The historic backwater stretch that hosts the annual Nehru Trophy snake boat races, popular for evening walks.

Qutub Minar

Attraction

Qutub Minar

Delhi, Delhi

A 73 m victory tower and UNESCO World Heritage Site in south Delhi.

Raghunath Temple

Attraction

Raghunath Temple

Kullu, Himachal Pradesh

The historic 17th-century spiritual anchor of the valley housing the sacred royal idol of Lord Rama.

Raja's Seat

Viewpoint

Raja's Seat

Coorg (Madikeri), Karnataka

A small pavilion in a public garden where the Kodagu rajas came to watch the sun go down, and the view west over the valleys is still the reason. Crowded at dusk, with a musical fountain you may or may not want.

Ram Jhula

Experience

Ram Jhula

Rishikesh, Uttarakhand

A suspension footbridge three kilometres upstream, linking Swargashram to Muni Ki Reti. Motorbikes use it too, so crossing is a negotiation. Laxman Jhula further up is narrower and older.

Ram Raja Temple

Experience

Ram Raja Temple

Orchha, Madhya Pradesh

The only place where Rama is worshipped as a reigning king, so the state police mount a guard and present arms at set hours. It is a palace rather than a temple because the image, once installed here, could not be moved to the temple built for it.
