Ziro Valley, Arunachal Pradesh

Valley of Flowers National Park, Uttarakhand
Twenty-five kilometres on from Govindghat, so most people fold Badrinath into the same trip. Open late April to November.
Kaziranga National Park, Assam
The western range, with the highest rhino density in the park. Jeeps run morning and afternoon and elephant rides also operate here, limited and booked at dawn. The grass is tall, so a morning slot sees more.
Deoghar (Baidyanath Dham), Jharkhand
The Jyotirlinga of Shiva at the centre of the Shravan kanwar pilgrimage.
A meadow above Pahalgam ringed by pine, reached on foot or on horseback. It was the site of the April 2025 attack on tourists and was closed afterwards; it has not appeared on the lists of spots since reopened, so check the current position locally before counting on it.
Jamnagar, Gujarat
Chanting of the Ram dhun has gone on here without a break since August 1964, which put the temple in the Guinness records. Someone is always singing. You can sit down and join in or just listen.
Wayanad, Kerala
The largest earth dam in India, and the islands in the reservoir are hilltops left standing when the water rose. Speedboats run from the shore. There is a long uphill walk from the car park that nobody warns you about.

Mathura & Vrindavan, Uttar Pradesh
Vrindavan's most beloved Krishna temple, famous for its lively darshan.
The curtain is drawn across the deity every minute or two rather than left open — the tradition holds that an unbroken gaze is too much to bear. There are no bells here either. Very crowded, and the Mangala aarti happens only once a year.
