Hall of a Thousand Pillars

Attraction

Hall of a Thousand Pillars

Madurai (Meenakshi Amman Temple), Tamil Nadu

Nine hundred and eighty-five pillars rather than a thousand, put up in 1569 and now used as the temple museum. Every column is carved differently, which is easier to take in along the edges than in the middle.

Hanuman Garhi

Attraction

Hanuman Garhi

Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh

A hilltop fort-temple dedicated to Hanuman, reached by a flight of steps.

Happy Valley Tea Estate

Experience

Happy Valley Tea Estate

Darjeeling, West Bengal

Planted in 1854 and among the oldest gardens in Darjeeling, three kilometres out of town. Plucking runs March to November and there is little to see outside that; the factory closes on Mondays.

Hawa Mahal

Attraction

Hawa Mahal

Jaipur, Rajasthan

Built in 1799 by Sawai Pratap Singh in red and pink sandstone, on the edge of the City Palace and joined to the zenana, the women's quarters. Its nine hundred and fifty-three lattice windows — jharokhas — let the women of the household watch processions in the street below without being seen, and the honeycomb of openings pulls air through the building, which is what keeps it bearable in a Jaipur summer. The famous view is from outside, facing east: go before nine, while the sun is on the front. Inside it is narrow ramps and small chambers, and much less than the facade promises.

Hazratbal Shrine

Attraction

Hazratbal Shrine

Hazratbal Shrine (Srinagar), Jammu & Kashmir

The white-marble lakeside shrine housing a sacred relic of the Prophet.

Hazratganj

Market

Hazratganj

Hemis Heritage Museum

Attraction

A gallery below the monastery holding thangkas, ritual objects and gilded figures the gompa had in storage. Small, well lit, and easy to miss if you only look at the courtyard.

Hemkund Sahib

Attraction

Hemkund Sahib

Valley of Flowers National Park, Uttarakhand

Six kilometres above Ghangaria on the other fork, at about 4,600 metres. Most people do the valley one day and Hemkund the next rather than both at once.

Hexagonal Basalt Columns

Hexagonal Basalt Columns

St. Mary's Islands (Udupi), Karnataka

Geologically rare columnar basalt formations on the islands.

Hidimba Devi Temple

Attraction

An ancient wooden temple built over a giant rock cavern in a dense cedar forest, featuring unique folk art carvings.

Hidlumane Falls

Experience

A multi-tiered waterfall on the trekking route up to the peak.

Hikkim Highest Post Office

Experience

Hikkim Highest Post Office

Spiti Valley (Kaza), Himachal Pradesh

At 4,440 metres, opened in 1983, and it does actually work — one postmaster and a bag that goes down to Kaza and out. Postcards from here take weeks. Carry your own; the shop next door may be shut.

Howrah Bridge

Viewpoint

Howrah Bridge

Kolkata, West Bengal

A riveted cantilever span opened in 1943, carrying an extraordinary weight of foot traffic. Photographing it from the bridge is prohibited and the rule is enforced. The flower market at Mullick Ghat underneath, busiest before dawn, is the better reason to come.

Hoysaleswara Temple (Halebidu)

Attraction

Hoysaleswara Temple (Halebidu)

Belur & Halebidu, Karnataka

A colossal twin-structured temple complex wrapped in over two hundred meters of continuous, horizontal exterior stone scroll friezes.

HPCA Stadium

Viewpoint

HPCA Stadium

McLeodganj & Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh

One of the highest international cricket grounds anywhere, with the Dhauladhar wall standing directly behind the stands. On non-match days you can usually walk in and look, which is worth ten minutes.

Humayun's Tomb

Attraction

Humayun's Tomb

Delhi, Delhi

A Mughal garden-tomb and UNESCO site that inspired the Taj Mahal.

Hunder Sand Dunes

Attraction

Hunder Sand Dunes

Ima Keithel (Mother's Market)

Market

Ima Keithel (Mother's Market)

Imphal, Manipur

A centuries-old market run entirely by thousands of women.

Indroda Dinosaur and Fossil Park

Attraction

Gandhinagar, Gujarat

Widely recognized as India's Jurassic Park, this unique 400-hectare eco-reserve run by the GEER Foundation features actual fossilized dinosaur eggs and bones discovered across western India, lifelike scale models of prehistoric beasts, an open-air botanical nursery, a zoo, and a massive wilderness walk trail along the Sabarmati riverbed.

Indus-Zanskar Confluence

Viewpoint

Indus-Zanskar Confluence

Magnetic Hill, Leh & Ladakh

The Zanskar arrives grey with silt and the Indus is greener, and below the join the two run side by side for a stretch without mixing. Sharpest in summer, when the Zanskar is in melt. It is also the put-in for most Indus rafting.

Inner Cave Sanctum

Attraction

Kamakhya Temple, Assam

The natural subterranean stone fissure representing the Goddess, continuously fed by a sacred underground spring.

Irrawaddy Dolphin Safari

Experience

Irrawaddy Dolphin Safari

Chilika & Rambha Coast, Odisha

Boat trips to spot rare Irrawaddy dolphins in the lagoon.

Jagatpita Brahma Mandir

Attraction

Jagatpita Brahma Mandir

Pushkar, Rajasthan

One of very few temples anywhere dedicated to Brahma, and by some distance the most important of them. The structure dates to the fourteenth century with later partial rebuilding, in marble and stone slabs, with a red shikhara and a hamsa — the goose that carries Brahma — as its motif. The sanctum holds a four-headed image of Brahma with Gayatri beside him, and the temple is governed by a Sanyasi ascetic priesthood. It stands a few minutes from Pushkar Lake, to which its legend is tied. Shoes come off well before the steps, and cameras are not welcome in the sanctum.
