Rishikesh: Yoga, Rapids, and the Ganga Aarti

Best time to go October to March is most comfortable for being outdoors, walking the ghats, rafting, and sitting through yoga sessions without the summer heat. Rafting itself runs on a wider window, broadly September through June, so it is worth checking river conditions separately from general best-time-to-visit advice if rafting is the main draw.

The Ganga Aarti at Triveni Ghat The Rishikesh version of the ceremony is smaller and less crowded than Varanasi, held every evening at Triveni Ghat, roughly 6:00 to 7:00 PM in summer between April and September, and 5:30 to 6:30 PM in winter between October and March, timed to sunset. Arrive about 45 minutes early for a seat on the steps and to watch the preparations. Shared rowboats are the other way to watch it, out on the river itself.

River rafting The stretch of the Ganga through Rishikesh is one of the established rafting runs in India, graded from gentle to genuinely technical depending on the section. Outfitters cluster around the Shivpuri to Rishikesh stretch, and most trips run half a day without requiring prior experience for the standard grade.

Yoga and the ashrams This is where the "yoga capital of the world" reputation comes from in practice. Parmarth Niketan, right on the riverbank, and the Sivananda Ashram both run structured daily sessions open to visitors, not only long-term students. A single drop-in class is enough to get a feel for it, with the river running past doing a lot of the work.

Getting oriented Rishikesh splits across the river via two footbridges, Ram Jhula and Lakshman Jhula, with most ashrams, cafes, and ghats on the eastern bank. It is a walkable town once across the river, and the bridges themselves, busy with pedestrians, cows, and the occasional motorbike, are very much part of the experience.
