Lepakshi, in Andhra Pradesh's Sri Sathya Sai district, is known for the 16th-century Veerabhadra Temple, a masterpiece of Vijayanagara architecture. It is famed for its intricately carved pillars, vivid ceiling frescoes, a giant monolithic Nandi bull nearby and the mysterious hanging pillar that barely touches the ground.

When to go

October to February is ideal; the temple is atmospheric year-round but best explored in the cooler months.

Why visit

The Nandi outside is among the largest cut from a single stone anywhere. Inside, the unfinished marriage hall is more interesting than the famous hanging pillar: the carvers simply stopped, and you can see the exact line where.

Cultural notes

Built during the Vijayanagara era, Lepakshi is linked in legend to the Ramayana, said to be where the bird Jatayu fell after confronting Ravana.

By Road: Lepakshi is about 15 km off the Bengaluru to Hyderabad highway, roughly 120 km from Bengaluru. By Air and Train: Bengaluru's airport is the nearest major hub; Hindupur is the closest railway station, about 12 km away.
