The Haji Ali Dargah is one of Mumbai's most recognisable landmarks — a white-domed Indo-Islamic shrine and mosque set on a tiny islet in the Arabian Sea, reached by a causeway that submerges at high tide. The tomb of the saint Pir Haji Ali Shah Bukhari draws pilgrims of all faiths.

When to go

Best visited October to March, though hill shrines may open only May-October.

Why visit

The causeway out to the shrine floods at high tide, so check the tide before setting off or you will be waiting on the promenade. Open to everyone, and fullest on Thursday and Friday evenings.

Cultural notes

Built in 1431, the dargah blends Indo-Islamic architecture with Mumbai's maritime setting and remains a powerful symbol of the city's pluralism.

How to reach

In Mumbai on an islet off Worli; reached on foot via a causeway accessible at low tide. Well connected within the city.
