Thanjavur, once Tanjore, sits in the fertile Kaveri delta and is dominated by the Brihadeeswarar Temple — the 'Big Temple'. Commissioned in 1010 CE by the Chola emperor Raja Raja I, it is one of the grandest granite temples ever built and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built from interlocking granite blocks, its 66-metre vimana tower is capped by a single stone block said to weigh around 80 tonnes, and the courtyard holds one of India's largest Nandi bull statues.

When to go

The ideal months to experience Thanjavur are from October to March when the winter weather is comfortably cool for open stone courtyard walking.

Why visit

Finished in 1010 and still the most impressive thing the Cholas built. The vimana is sixty-six metres of interlocking granite in a river delta that has no granite in it — every block was hauled here. Go late in the afternoon, when the tower throws its shadow across the courtyard.

Cultural notes

Inscribed as a foundational core of the UNESCO World Heritage Great Living Chola Temples, the site is central to regional identity. It was a primary center for the development of Bharatanatyam classical dance, Carnatic music, and traditional bronze icon casting crafts. It holds a GI tag for Tanjore gold-leaf paintings.

The closest airport is Tiruchirappalli International Airport, located 55 km away. Thanjavur hosts its own railway station smoothly linked to Chennai and Madurai, with regular state transport buses and taxi lines operating along the delta corridor highways daily.

Ooty sits at 2,240 metres and was built by the British as a hot-weather escape, which is still exactly what it is used for — and why April and May are the months to avoid, when the plains empty into it. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway is the best thing in the district. It climbs from Mettupalayam on a rack-and-pinion section, takes about five hours, and is UNESCO-listed. Book ahead in season or take the ordinary carriage, which is fine. Doddabetta, the highest point in the Nilgiris, is ten kilometres out and usually inside cloud by afternoon. The Botanical Garden dates from 1848 and has a fossil trunk around twenty million years old in it. The lake is man-made and rented out by the hour. Tea here is grown for volume rather than for named estates, and the roadside shops sell a great deal of flavoured dust. Buy from an estate if you care about it. September to November, and January to March.

Rameshwaram sits at the very tip of a slender island connected to the Tamil Nadu mainland by the Pamban Bridge, looking out across the Palk Strait toward Sri Lanka.
