Minjar Fair

An ancient monsoon harvest fair where citizens float silk tassels into the Ravi River to pray for a prosperous crop.

Commemorates the 10th-century military victory of the Raja of Chamba and honors a historic saint who performed miracles to divert the Ravi River, granting pilgrims access to the holy Hari Rai Temple.

People from all walks of life pin a delicate silk tassel (Minjar), which represents a maize shoot, to their traditional attire. The town meadow transforms into a massive marketplace with cultural stalls. Evenings feature classical Himachali sangeet performances and the singing of traditional 'Kunjari-Malhar' rain songs.

The fair opens with the distribution of Minjar cords at the royal palace counters. A massive, multi-kilometer colorful procession carrying the palanquins (Raths) of local deities winds through the town streets. On the final day, the silk Minjar tassels along with coconuts are ritually thrown into the Ravi River as an offering to Varuna.

Offering the silk maize shoot to the river god Varuna ensures that the monsoon rains remain gentle, preventing destructive landslides and flash floods while guaranteeing a rich autumn harvest.

Dating back to 935 AD under the rule of Raja Sahil Varman, the fair evolved from an exclusive royal court harvest thanksgiving ceremony into a massive, state-funded cultural and trade exhibition that draws artisans from across northwest India.

The vast green lawns of the Chamba Chaugan are alive with a sea of Pahari caps and flowing colorful dresses. Every person carries a gleaming golden silk tassel pinned to their chest. The air carries the sweet melody of traditional flutes and the smell of hot, spiced local dishes. As the grand procession moves toward the roaring Ravi River, you are immersed in a celebration of living mountain heritage.
