Umaid Bhawan Palace is one of the world's largest private residences, built on Chittar Hill in Jodhpur. Part of the palace is the royal family's residence, part is a museum, and part is run by Taj Hotels.
1929-1943
History
Commissioned by Maharaja Umaid Singh partly as famine-relief employment for the Marwar region during a severe drought, the palace was designed by architect Henry Vaughan Lanchester in an Indo-Deco style blending Beaux-Arts and traditional Rajput forms, using locally quarried sandstone assembled without mortar. It has 347 rooms and interiors by the Polish artist Stefan Norblin.
