Nameri National Park, in the Sonitpur district of Assam at the foothills of Arunachal Pradesh, is a birdwatcher's paradise along the Jia Bhoroli river. Famed for the rare white-winged wood duck, it also shelters elephants, tigers, leopards and clouded leopards, and has gentle rafting down the Jia Bhoroli through forest.

When to go

November to April is best, with pleasant weather and excellent birding; the park closes during the monsoon.

Why visit

No jeep safaris here. You walk, with a forest guard, which is why it feels nothing like Kaziranga. Rafting down the Jia Bhoroli is the other half of a day. The white-winged wood duck, Assam's state bird, is the one everybody is after.

Cultural notes

Nameri adjoins the Pakke reserve in Arunachal and is known for conserving the rare white-winged wood duck.

How to reach

By Road: Nameri is about 35 km from Tezpur. By Air and Train: Tezpur has a small airport and railhead, while Guwahati is the larger gateway, roughly 220 km away.

Kaziranga National Park is a vital wildlife conservation sanctuary spanning over 430 square kilometers of alluvial floodplains along the southern banks of the Brahmaputra River in Assam. The unique landscape comprises a dense marshy terrain dominated by towering elephant grass, shallow reed swamps, and open sal forest canopies. The national park is known for hosting over two-thirds of the world's entire surviving population of the endangered Great Indian One-Horned Rhinoceros. According to tradition, this is where the **yoni (womb)** of Goddess Sati fell when Lord Vishnu's Sudarshana Chakra divided her body. Here the Goddess is worshipped as **Kamakhya**, and her guardian Bhairava (a form of Shiva) as **Umananda**. Majuli

Majuli is a river island in the Brahmaputra that is smaller every year, and going there is partly about seeing something that is going. Erosion has taken more than half the island since the middle of the last century. You reach it by ferry from Nimati Ghat near Jorhat, which takes about an hour and runs to its own schedule rather than yours. What is there is the satras — Vaishnavite monasteries founded from the sixteenth century, where monks still perform the masked dance-dramas the tradition was built on. Kamalabari and Auniati are the ones to see; Samaguri is the satra where the masks themselves are made, and the mask-makers will show you the work if you ask. Rent a bicycle. The island is flat, the distances between satras are short, and the roads are quiet enough that this is genuinely the best way to move. November to March is dry and mild. Come during the monsoon and you will find the ferry unreliable and parts of the island under water — which is, in fairness, the honest version of the place.
