Kaziranga National Park is a vital wildlife conservation sanctuary spanning over 430 square kilometers of alluvial floodplains along the southern banks of the Brahmaputra River in Assam. The unique landscape comprises a dense marshy terrain dominated by towering elephant grass, shallow reed swamps, and open sal forest canopies. The national park is known for hosting over two-thirds of the world's entire surviving population of the endangered Great Indian One-Horned Rhinoceros. The reserve floor operates under strict environmental regulations, split systematically into four safari ranges. Bagori range remains popular for early morning elephant-back safaris, allowing close, safe tracking lines to observe rhinos grazing peacefully in the high morning mists.

A short history

Declared a reserve forest in 1908 on the initiative of Mary Curzon, wife of the Viceroy, after she reportedly failed to see a single rhino on a visit — the area then held only a handful. It became a national park in 1974 and is now credited with bringing the greater one-horned rhinoceros back from near-extinction.

Why visit

Kaziranga holds roughly two-thirds of the world's one-horned rhinos, and you will see them; this is not a park where you hope. Shut through the monsoon, open around November to April, and the Bagori range in the west has the highest density.

Cultural notes

Declared a protected forest range in 1905 through the personal intervention of Baroness Curzon, the park was inscribed as a prestigious UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985. It has successfully preserved a fragile riverine biosphere, today also hosting a high tracking density of Royal Bengal Tigers, Asian elephants, and rare migratory bird heritages.

How to reach

The closest airport is Jorhat Airport (97 km away), though Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati (220 km) is widely used. The nearest rail head is at Jakhalabandha station, located 20 km from the core gates, smoothly connected via the multi-lane National Highway 715 corridor.

Gulmarg

Gulmarg is a bowl of meadow at 2,650 metres in the Pir Panjal, and it does two completely different jobs depending on the month. December to March it is the only serious ski resort in India. The Apharwat face has real off-piste terrain and the snow is dry enough to justify the trip. May to September the snow is gone and it is a meadow full of wildflowers with a golf course on it, one of the highest anywhere. The gondola climbs in two stages. The first, to Kongdoori, almost always runs. The second, up to just under four thousand metres on Apharwat, is frequently closed for wind and its tickets are capped daily — buy both stages early or accept that you may only get the first. If you are skiing off-piste, a guide is not optional. This is avalanche terrain and it has killed people.

Kamakhya Temple

Kamakhya Temple in Guwahati, Assam is one of the Shakti Peethas, the sacred shrines of the Divine Mother in the Shakta tradition of Hinduism. According to tradition, this is where the **yoni (womb)** of Goddess Sati fell when Lord Vishnu's Sudarshana Chakra divided her body. Here the Goddess is worshipped as **Kamakhya**, and her guardian Bhairava (a form of Shiva) as **Umananda**. It is counted among the eighteen Ashtadasha Maha Shakti Peethas — the most revered of all the seats of the Goddess. Shakti Peethas are among the holiest pilgrimage sites for devotees of the Goddess, drawing pilgrims especially during Navratri and Durga Puja. Each is tied to the legend of Sati, whose body parts fell across the Indian subcontinent and beyond, sanctifying the ground where they landed.

Majuli

Majuli is a river island in the Brahmaputra that is smaller every year, and going there is partly about seeing something that is going. Erosion has taken more than half the island since the middle of the last century. You reach it by ferry from Nimati Ghat near Jorhat, which takes about an hour and runs to its own schedule rather than yours. What is there is the satras — Vaishnavite monasteries founded from the sixteenth century, where monks still perform the masked dance-dramas the tradition was built on. Kamalabari and Auniati are the ones to see; Samaguri is the satra where the masks themselves are made, and the mask-makers will show you the work if you ask. Rent a bicycle. The island is flat, the distances between satras are short, and the roads are quiet enough that this is genuinely the best way to move. November to March is dry and mild. Come during the monsoon and you will find the ferry unreliable and parts of the island under water — which is, in fairness, the honest version of the place.
