Safdarjung's Tomb is a garden-tomb built around 1754 for Safdarjung, the powerful Nawab of Awadh and a prime minister of the Mughal empire. Set in a formal charbagh garden, its red-and-buff sandstone dome and symmetrical layout make it one of the last great monuments of the Mughal era.

When to go

October to March is the most comfortable time to wander the gardens; mornings are peaceful and good for photography.

Why visit

Built in 1754, the last of Delhi's great garden tombs, and it shows the decline — some of its stone was taken off earlier tombs. Almost nobody comes, which after the crowds at Humayun's Tomb is exactly the point.

Cultural notes

The tomb marks the twilight of Mughal building in Delhi and is often studied alongside Humayun's Tomb, which clearly inspired its design.

How to reach

By Metro: Jor Bagh station (Yellow Line) is a short walk away. By Road: The tomb stands at the end of Lodhi Road. By Air and Train: About 14 km from the airport and 8 km from New Delhi Railway Station.
