Tirthan Valley is a quiet, offbeat river valley on the edge of the Great Himalayan National Park (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) in Himachal Pradesh. Named after the crystal-clear Tirthan River, it has emerged as a slow-travel and workation favourite for those seeking pine forests, trout streams and riverside homestays far from the tourist crowds. With no big hotels and a strong eco-tourism ethic, the valley centres on activities like trout fishing, river crossing, forest treks and lazy days by the water. It suits people who want to sit by a river for a week rather than tick off viewpoints.

When to go

March to June and September to November. Winters are cold and very quiet; the monsoon is green but the trails turn slippery.

Why visit

The Tirthan is a trout river, fished on permit and catch-and-release in places. The Great Himalayan National Park behind it is UNESCO-listed and needs a permit and usually a guide, and that is exactly what keeps this valley empty next to Kullu.

Cultural notes

The valley sits in the Banjar region of Kullu, known for traditional wooden Himachali temples and a strong community-based eco-tourism culture protecting the national park.

How to reach

Nearest airport: Bhuntar (50 km). Nearest rail: Aut (the valley turns off the Mandi-Manali highway near the Aut tunnel). Buses and cabs run from Aut and Banjar.
