Srirangapatna, an island in the Kaveri, was the capital of Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan — and the place where Tipu, the Tiger of Mysore, fell defending the breach in 1799 in the last great battle against the East India Company. The fort's river-facing ramparts, the Delhi and Bangalore gates, the spot where Tipu's body was found, his Gumbaz mausoleum and the Daria Daulat summer palace with its murals make the island one continuous battlefield museum.
