Buddha Purnima (Vesak)

Commemorates the birth, enlightenment and death of Gautama Buddha. Observed with prayers, meditation and processions, especially at Bodh Gaya and Sarnath.

Uniquely commemorates a triple milestone in the life of Gautama Buddha: his birth as Prince Siddhartha, his attainment of supreme enlightenment under the Bodhi tree, and his physical death.

Devotees dress in simple white attire and assemble at monasteries before dawn to hoist the Buddhist flag. Offerings of flowers and candles are made, and massive acts of charity are undertaken.

Features chanting praises to the Three Jewels. A highly symbolic ritual involves pouring scented water over a small statue of the Buddha, representing the cleansing of bad karma.

The wilting of offered flowers and burning out of candles serve as poignant reminders of impermanence, showing that physical existence is transient and subject to decay.

Originating in India, the epicenters of celebration remain the historical sites of Buddha's life, though it has evolved into a highly diverse, transnational observance across Asia.

Buddha Purnima is the quietest of India's big festivals. Monasteries glow softly with the light of thousands of butter lamps, and the deep, resonant chanting of monks fills the air. Devotees walk mindfully around sacred stupas, turning prayer wheels. The visual simplicity, dominated by the white robes of the pilgrims and the hues of the Buddhist flag, creates a contemplative space that invites visitors to pause, reflect, and experience a powerful sense of inner peace.
