Significance

The traditional season-opening snake boat race of Kerala, marking the ancient installation transit of a royal idol.

Why it's celebrated

Commemorates the historic 16th-century royal journey where the sacred idol of Lord Krishna was transported by boat from Kurichi to the Ambalapuzha Temple under the orders of the Raja of Chembakassery.

How it's celebrated

The roaring monsoon waters of the Pampa River host massive snake boats (Chundan Vallams). Oarsmen sing traditional fast-paced songs while slicing their paddles in absolute, lightning-fast unison. Thousands of spectators with colorful umbrellas crowd the rain-washed palm-fringed banks.

Key rituals

The festival begins with a ceremonial water procession led by the chief traditional vessel representing the Ambalapuzha deity. Priests offer sacred offerings (Pooja) on the water, followed by competitive heats where boats race down a straight 1-kilometer river track.

Beliefs & spiritual meaning

It is believed that witnessing the lead boat cross the finish line brings good luck and wards off devastating monsoon floods from the low-lying agricultural fields of the Kuttanad region.

History & origins

Dating back to 1599 AD, the event was structurally recorded by royal chroniclers. It successfully bridges religious divides, with local Christian and Hindu families historically collaborating to build, fund, and row the village boats.

Tips for travellers

Expect heavy monsoon rains during the event; a high-quality umbrella or robust waterproof rain gear is absolutely necessary. Arrive at the Champakulam bridge area by 11:00 AM to secure a dry, unobstructed view of the start line.

What to expect

The grey monsoon sky hangs heavy over Kuttanad as the Pampa River comes alive with wild energy. Massive snake boats, carrying lines of synchronized rowers, slice through the water like arrows, their paddles throwing up sheets of white spray. The hypnotic rhythm of the boat songs blends with the roaring cheers of thousands under umbrellas, capturing the raw, rain-washed essence of Kerala's maritime spirit.
