Significance

The traditional Meitei New Year, marked by domestic feast cooking and climbing local sacred mountain tops.

Why it's celebrated

Rooted in ancient Sanamahism traditions to mark the transition of the cosmic cycles, clear away the accumulated misfortune of the past year, and systematically seek the mandate of the gods for peace, longevity, and agricultural abundance in the incoming year.

How it's celebrated

Homes are meticulously scrubbed, polished, and decorated with fresh flowers and green leaves. Families prepare an array of traditional vegetarian dishes, which are first formally offered to the deities at the household entrance. In the afternoon, entire neighborhoods step out to climb nearby sacred mountain peaks.

Key rituals

The day features distinct ritual sequences: first, 'Kongba Leithong Phaba' (the cleaning of the household threshold). Women prepare specialized rice and vegetable platters on clean banana leaves and place them at the front gate as a boundary offering to ward off negative spirits. The defining ritual is 'Ching Kaba', where thousands of people scale local hills like Cheirao Ching or Baruni Ching.

Beliefs & spiritual meaning

Climbing the hilltops (Ching Kaba) is a literal and metaphysical act. It is believed that ascending to the highest local point on New Year's day ensures that the individual's life path will continuously rise to greater heights of success, health, and spiritual enlightenment throughout the year.

History & origins

With a documented antiquity extending over thousands of years, Cheiraoba was historically directed by the royal courts of the Meitei kings, who utilized specialized court astrologers (Maichous) to declare the exact cosmic hours, preserving Sanamahi identity despite later integration with Vaishnavism.

Tips for travellers

To capture the true emotional scale of the festival, join the local crowds climbing Cheirao Ching in Imphal during the afternoon hours. Dress in lightweight, modest cotton clothes suitable for a steep hike. Savor the festive hospitality, but always remove your footwear before stepping onto a household's clean porch.

What to expect

The crisp spring morning in Imphal begins with the rhythmic sounds of sweeping and the fresh aroma of traditional curries filtering through the neighborhoods. At every gate, beautiful arrangements of seasonal vegetables and rice sit quietly on glossy banana leaves. As the sun peaks, the local hills are transformed into human chains of families climbing toward the summits, creating an inspiring spectacle of shared community hope and seasonal rebirth.
