Significance

The festival of lights, celebrating the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil. Marks Lord Rama's return to Ayodhya and the worship of Goddess Lakshmi for prosperity.

Why it's celebrated

The festival commemorates Lord Rama's return to Ayodhya after defeating the demon Ravana. In southern India, it marks Lord Krishna's victory over Narakasura. It is deeply syncretic, celebrating milestones across Hindu, Sikh, and Jain traditions.

How it's celebrated

Families clean and decorate their homes, light clay earthen lamps (diyas), create colorful floor patterns (rangoli), and share traditional sweets. It is a period of deep familial bonding, communal feasting, and economic surge.

Key rituals

The sequence starts with Dhanteras. Day two is Naraka Chaturdashi. Day three is the primary Lakshmi Puja at dusk. Day four is Govardhan Puja, and day five is Bhai Dooj celebrating the sibling bond.

Beliefs & spiritual meaning

The illumination of homes with diyas is believed to guide Goddess Lakshmi, the deity of prosperity, to the threshold of the household, dispelling inner and outer darkness.

History & origins

Rooted in ancient harvest traditions, Diwali is referenced in early Sanskrit texts like the Padma Purana. Over millennia, it evolved from an agrarian thanksgiving into a massive civilizational event.

Tips for travellers

Expect extreme crowds and potential winter air pollution in northern cities. Varanasi puts the whole thing out on the river ghats. Modest attire is required for participating in any pujas.

What to expect

For a first-time visitor, Diwali is an overwhelming, joyful assault on the senses. The air is thick with the scent of burning ghee, camphor, and firework smoke. Entire neighborhoods glow warmly under the light of thousands of flickering diyas, transforming ordinary streets into magical thoroughfares. Markets buzz with chaotic energy as locals shop for marigolds and shimmering clothes. While the sound of firecrackers can be intense, the underlying atmosphere is one of profound hospitality, with families eager to share their festive feasts.
