Significance

The primary agricultural crop protection festival of the Apatani tribe, involving sacrifices to clear insect pests.

Why it's celebrated

Celebrated to appease specific agricultural protector spirits (Tamu, Metii, Medr, and Killo) during the high-humidity monsoon season when the young rice stalks are most fragile and susceptible to disease.

How it's celebrated

The festival grounds feature an incredible blend of traditional attire and modern sports. Women dress in elegant white and red handwoven Apatani dresses (Galle) and perform graceful folk dances, while men engage in high-energy traditional wrestling (Miti) and bamboo pole climbing. Continuous rounds of fresh rice beer (Opo) are served alongside cucumber salads.

Key rituals

The central ritual involves the construction of a beautiful, temporary altar made from fresh green bamboo poles and banana leaves at the edge of the fields. The shaman performs solemn invocations, culminating in the sacrificial offering of fowls, goats, or pigs to the agricultural deities. Consecrated cucumber slices are distributed to all attendees as a symbol of health.

Beliefs & spiritual meaning

The distribution of fresh cucumber slices represents a prayer for cooling the earth and preventing pests. It is thought that strict adherence to the Dree rituals creates an invisible spiritual shield over the valley's unique ecosystem, ensuring that the autumn harvest brings plenty to every granary.

History & origins

Unified and institutionalized into a centralized public platform in 1967 through the leadership of tribal elders to preserve Apatani cultural identity amidst rapid modernization, it has grown into Arunachal's most celebrated monsoon cultural highlight.

Tips for travellers

July brings intense, heavy monsoon downpours to Ziro Valley; robust umbrellas, waterproof hiking boots, and heavy-duty rain casings for cameras are strictly mandatory. Arrive at the Hapoli ground by 9:00 AM to secure a prime spot along the viewing stands.

What to expect

The lush emerald-green rice terraces of Ziro Valley contrast with the bright red and white patterns of traditional Apatani dresses filling the festival fields. Despite the steady monsoon rain, the energy is electric as rows of dancers sway to rhythmic folk songs, their steps matching the ancient chants of the shaman standing before a fresh bamboo altar. Sharing crisp, cool cucumber slices and mugs of sweet Opo beer under a tent creates a warm and monsoon travel memory.
