When it happens
March
Falls on Phalguna Purnima (full moon), February–March. 2026: Holika Dahan Mar 3, Holi (Rangwali) Mar 4. Region: Nationwide (esp. North India).

The festival of colours marking the arrival of spring and the victory of good over evil. Celebrated by smearing coloured powders, water play, music and sweets.
The mythological framework centers on the demon king Hiranyakashipu, his devout son Prahlada, and the evil aunt Holika. It celebrates Prahlada's miraculous survival from a fire, signifying the victory of devotion over tyranny.
Communities gather to sing folk songs, consume traditional treats like gujiyas, and playfully throw vibrant colored powders (gulal) and colored water at friends, family, and strangers alike.
On the eve of Holi, massive community bonfires are lit (Holika Dahan). The unique Lathmar Holi in Barsana features women playfully beating men with wooden staffs, upending traditional dynamics.
The bonfires of Holika Dahan are believed to cleanse the community of evil and disease. The application of colors signifies the breaking down of social barriers and the celebration of life's vibrant nature.
Holi's origins are ancient, predating the Gupta period, with references in early Sanskrit texts and temple reliefs across the subcontinent.
Holi is an uninhibited, chaotic explosion of color and joy. Streets become a canvas of bright pinks, yellows, and greens as people chase each other with handfuls of gulal. The atmosphere is electric, filled with the rhythmic beating of dhol drums, the singing of traditional folk songs, and infectious laughter. It is a messy, experience where you will be warmly ambushed with colors by strangers shouting 'Holi Hai!'.
Bhang is a traditional cannabis preparation sold at licensed shops in certain states, but it should be consumed with extreme caution by first-time visitors.
