Significance

The grand Meitei wooden chariot festival mirroring Puri's Rath Yatra, moving deities across city lanes.

Why it's celebrated

Replicates the ancient scriptural journey of Lord Krishna (as Jagannath) along with his siblings from their royal sanctuary to their aunt's garden house, symbolizing the lord's accessibility to all common householders regardless of social status.

How it's celebrated

Thousands of devotees pack the wide avenues of Imphal. Massive wooden chariots (Kangs), beautifully adorned with colorful silks, intricate canopies, and flags, are pulled manually using thick ropes. The air is thick with the frantic chanting of 'Hari Bol', the clanging of large brass cymbals (Pung), and the singing of traditional kirtans.

Key rituals

The festival opens with the dramatic 'Prabhu Jagannath Thaba' (the ceremonial installation of the deities onto the chariot). This is followed by the chariot pulling heats. For the next eight days, community centers host specialized evening music rituals called 'Sankirtan', where traditional Manipuri Pung drums are played in mesmerizing loops, concluding on the tenth day with the return journey (Purnajatra).

Beliefs & spiritual meaning

Touching the sacred ropes of the chariot or assisting in pulling the Kang is believed to destroy severe physical and spiritual sins, granting the devotee long-term health and absolute protection from sudden accidents. The evening Sankirtan performances are thought to spiritually purify the entire neighborhood.

History & origins

Introduced and systematically institutionalized in the late 18th century by the visionary Meitei King Bhagyachandra (Rajarshi), who embraced Vaishnavism and masterfully redesigned traditional temple protocols, integrating classical Manipuri dance and percussion into the festival framework.

Tips for travellers

The most high-density visual event occurs outside the gates of the Govindajee Temple on the first day. Wear simple cotton clothes and expect muddy conditions due to the heavy July monsoon rains. Exercise safety around the large moving chariot wheels.

What to expect

Under a dramatic July monsoon sky, the wide streets of Imphal transform into an ocean of deep devotion. Thousands of hands grip the thick jute ropes, pulling the massive, silk-decked wooden chariot forward as the frantic, hypnotic rhythms of the Manipuri Pung drums reach a fever pitch. White-clad devotees with horizontal sandalwood tilaks sway in ecstatic kirtan lines, with a look at the classical artistic soul of Manipur.
