A spectacular temple pageant packing an array of caparisoned elephants, custom orchestration, and visual parasol shifts.

Organized to mark the annual festival of the Asramam shrine, bringing together participating temples from across Kollam district to pay ritual homage through grand competitive exhibitions.

The massive Asramam maidan transforms into a dense sea of spectators. Dozens of majestic caparisoned elephants stand lined up in a spectacular face-off. Master musicians perform complex, multi-hour percussion ensembles (Chenda Melam), culminating in a stunning display of synchronized fireworks at night.

The core highlight is the 'Kudamattom' ritual, where teams standing atop the elephants rapidly exchange brilliantly colored, multi-tiered silk parasols and matching venchamarams (whisks) in a fast-paced rhythm. This is accompanied by the intense 'Panchavadyam' orchestration.

The alignment of the majestic elephants and the continuous, resonant vibrations of the sacred temple drums are believed to cleanse the local atmosphere of negative spiritual blocks, inviting general prosperity and health to the maritime port town.

Historically supported by the local merchant guilds and the royal house of Travancore, Kollam Pooram has grown structurally in the late 20th century to become the flagship cultural congregation of the district.

The deafening, complex thunder of a hundred Chenda drums rolls across the massive ground, sending visible waves of excitement through the crowd. Atop a line of thirty caparisoned elephants, silk parasols of bright purple, gold, and crimson are raised and swapped in a flash, matching the frantic rhythm of the music. The entire scene is a high-energy explosion of color, sound, and deep heritage pride.
