Mysuru Dasara

Karnataka's 400-year-old royal state festival, famous for the illuminated Mysore Palace and the grand Jamboo Savari elephant procession on Vijayadashami.

The festival commemorates Goddess Chamundeshwari slaying the buffalo demon Mahishasura, liberating the local region which was subsequently named Mahishuru, which later evolved into the modern name Mysuru.

The spectacular Mysuru Palace is illuminated by nearly 100,000 light bulbs every evening. The festival features classical music concerts, traditional dance performances, sports tournaments, and a massive grand procession through the city streets.

Special worship rituals (Puja) are performed by the descendants of the Wadiyar royal family inside the palace. On the final day of Vijayadashami, a golden palanquin (Chinnada Ambari) carrying the idol of the Goddess is placed on a decorated elephant for the famous Jumboo Savari procession.

Local residents believe that the Goddess actively guards the city and its people from natural disasters and negative spiritual forces when her victory is honored with absolute devotion and community pride.

The tradition was first initiated by the kings of the Vijayanagara Empire in the 15th century. After their fall, the Wadiyar dynasty revived the grand celebration in 1610, evolving it over centuries into a public festival supported by the state government.
