Konark Dance Festival

A festival of Indian classical dance — Odissi, Bharatanatyam, Kathak and more — performed in an open-air setting before the UNESCO Sun Temple.

Organized to boost tourism and showcase Odisha's architectural heritage, the festival serves as a tribute to the ancient builders who carved dancing figures into the walls of the Sun Temple.

The open-air stage comes alive with nightly performances of Odissi, Kathak, Bharatanatyam, Kuchipudi, and Manipuri. Masters and their troupes perform complex orchestrations before an audience of international travelers and art connoisseurs.

Daily events begin with an invocation dance dedicated to the Sun God, Surya, alongside the formal lighting of lamps by classical dance exponents and state officials.

The cosmic solar rhythms are believed to be deeply intertwined with the hand gestures (mudras) and spatial movements of Indian dance, creating a sacred connection between the dancers and the cosmos.

Launched in 1986 by Odisha Tourism and the Odissi Research Centre, the festival was envisioned by legendary Odissi guru Kelucharan Mohapatra and administrative pioneers to elevate classical arts.

The Konark Dance Festival puts classical dance in front of a thirteenth-century temple, which is the whole idea. As darkness falls, the 13th-century Konark Sun Temple, built to resemble a colossal stone chariot, is illuminated by warm floodlights. The sound of ankle bells (ghungroos) fills the night air, accompanied by traditional flutes and drums. The graceful movements of the dancers mirror the stone carvings behind them.
