When it happens
March
Held on the 10th and 11th of Malayalam month Meenam (March). Region: Chavara, Kollam, Kerala.

A unique ritual where thousands of men cross-dress in traditional silk sarees to hold oil lamps for the Goddess.
According to village legend, a group of young cowherds playfully dressed as girls and offered a coconut to a sacred stone. The stone suddenly bled, revealing the living presence of Goddess Durga. The goddess instructed that only those dressed in feminine attire could offer prayers at the spot.
Thousands of men, including youth, corporate workers, and trans-individuals from across India, visit the temple after transforming themselves with beautiful silk sarees, traditional makeup, jasmine garlands, and heavy gold jewelry. At night, they hold five-tiered lit lamps (Chamayavilakku) and walk in slow processions around the shrine.
The central ritual occurs at midnight, where the beautifully dressed participants stand in long, orderly rows inside the roofless temple compound. They hold the traditional 'Jeevitha' lamp structures aloft, keeping the oil wicks burning for hours while seeking the darshan of the deity.
Participating in this specific feminine penance is believed to instantly grant the fulfillment of deep personal wishes, ensure career success, wipe away physical illness, and bring emotional clarity to the devotee's household under the mother's protection.
Evolving from a localized, agrarian stone-worship ritual into a major state-recognized pilgrimage, the festival has expanded significantly in recent years, serving today as a vital global sanctuary for cultural expression and inclusive devotion.
Under the soft, ethereal glow of thousands of oil lamps, a spectacle unfolds inside the temple grounds. Thousands of figures in silk sarees, their hair woven with fresh white jasmine flowers, hold glowing bronze lamps aloft. The air is sweet with the scent of camphor and coconut oil as the soft, collective prayers move through the night, presenting a deeply moving lesson in cross-gender devotion.
Women fully participate as supportive family members, managing the intricate makeup blocks and walking alongside the male pilgrims during the procession.
