Nishagandhi Dance Festival

An elite open-air performing arts festival assembling master exponents of Bharatanatyam, Kathakali, and Odissi.

Instituted by the state government to honor master exponents of Indian classical arts and systematically position Kerala as a cultural tourism center during the winter holiday season.

The open-air amphitheater is transformed with sophisticated acoustic systems and elegant traditional decor. Master artists perform highly expressive recitals of Kathakali, Mohiniyattam, Bharatanatyam, Odissi, and Manipuri, drawing large gatherings of art critics, travelers, and local families.

As a secular administrative festival, there are no religious temple rituals. The event begins with a formal lamp-lighting ceremony by cultural leaders, followed by the presentation of the prestigious Nishagandhi Puraskaram award to an artistic maestro.

Operates on the civic belief that preserving and staging the classical performing arts in a public pavilion democratizes heritage, ensuring that ancient expressions of storytelling remain vibrant and economically viable for future generations.

Launched in the late 1980s by the Department of Tourism, Government of Kerala, the festival has evolved into one of the country's most respected annual arts gatherings, celebrated for its curated programming and stellar production values.

Under a clear winter night sky, the stone stage of the Nishagandhi Theatre glows warm under amber spotlights. The delicate chime of bronze ankle bells and the dramatic movements of a Mohiniyattam dancer dressed in white and gold silk create an atmosphere. Surrounded by the whispering palms of the palace grounds, you are treated to a curated showcase of India's finest classical arts.
