Significance

The spring harvest festival of Goan Hindus, expressed through street float parades, folk drumming, and traditional dances.

Why it's celebrated

Commemorates the historic homecoming of local Maratha warriors who had left their fields to fight invaders during the winter months. It also celebrates the divine pastimes of Radha and Krishna and the destruction of the demoness Holika.

How it's celebrated

The festival features two variants: Dhakto Shigmo (celebrated by rural farmers with traditional songs) and Vhadlo Shigmo (celebrated on a larger civic scale). Massive street processions feature artists performing traditional folk dances like Ghode Modni, Fugdi, and Romat Mela under a shower of gulal (colored powder).

Key rituals

Villagers gather at the local temple yard (Mand) to invoke blessings from the deity through collective singing called Naman. Traditional wooden poles are decorated with colorful flags, and dancers carry massive ceremonial umbrellas (Tarangas) from village to village.

Beliefs & spiritual meaning

Singing traditional folksongs at the sacred Mand ensures community protection and a fertile harvest season. The colors used during the concluding days are believed to absorb the positive, warming energy of the incoming summer sun.

History & origins

Deeply rooted in the ancient agrarian lifestyle of the Konkan tribes. It survived heavy suppression during the era of the Portuguese Inquisition by retreating into deep inland villages, eventually re-emerging post-liberation as a grand public celebration of Goan Hindu heritage.

Tips for travellers

To see authentic folk dances, visit rural Ponda. For grand, modern mythological floats, attend the evening parades in Panaji or Margao. Arrive early at parade barriers to secure a clear photographic angle.

What to expect

The streets of Goa vibrate to the thunderous, hypnotic beats of massive Dhol and Tasha drums. Dancers clad in shimmering orange and gold turbans swirl across the asphalt, brandishing dummy swords in the striking warrior dance of Ghode Modni. The air is thick with clouds of pink and violet powder, creating a dizzying, cinematic spectacle of pure joy that reveals a deeply traditional side of Goa far beyond its famous beaches.
