Significance

A historic animal trading fair where thousands of decorated donkeys and camels are bartered at a seven-river confluence.

Why it's celebrated

Mythology states that Lord Kartikeya, the son of Shiva, visited this exact confluence on Kartik Purnima during his journey around the earth, performing penance and sanctifying the waters for eternity.

How it's celebrated

Thousands of donkeys and camels, beautifully decorated with colored dyes, tinsel, and ornaments, are brought for trade. Pastoral communities like the Vanjara and Rabari pitch hundreds of tents along the dry riverbeds, creating a massive desert-style encampment alive with folk music and campfire cooking.

Key rituals

The premier spiritual ritual is the midnight holy dip in the Saptasangam on Kartik Purnima night. Devotees perform deepdan (floating oil lamps) in the river channel. Traders perform a ritualistic grooming and feeding ceremony for their animals before opening financial negotiations.

Beliefs & spiritual meaning

Taking a bath at the Saptasangam is believed to cure skin ailments and wash away severe sins, equivalent to performing multiple pilgrimage circuits elsewhere. A successful sale of an animal here is thought to bring good luck and divine protection to the pastoral clan.

History & origins

Mentioned in medieval Gujarati texts, this fair has been organized for centuries by nomadic tribes. It serves as a vital historical trade bridge between the arid regions of Saurashtra and the fertile plains of central Gujarat.

Tips for travellers

Hire a private taxi from Ahmedabad (approx. 60 km away) to reach Vautha comfortably. Wear high-quality dust masks and sunglasses, as the moving animals stir up massive dust clouds. The best photography happens during the first two days when animal numbers peak.

What to expect

A surreal, vast landscape unfolds as thousands of campfires illuminate the wide, sandy banks of the Saptasangam. The night air carries the wild smell of woodsmoke and livestock, punctuated by the rhythmic strumming of folk instruments. Everywhere you look, thousands of donkeys painted in whimsical shades of pink, indigo, and yellow stand in neat rows, creating a colorful animal spectacle that feels like a scene from an ancient silk road trading camp.
