The trail
Every evening the pavement beside Law Garden turns into Ahmedabad's favourite khao gali — a lane of vegetarian stalls where woks flare over gobi manchurian, grilled sandwiches disappear under grated cheese, and families graze from cart to cart until late. It is loud, buttery, strictly veg and completely Amdavadi.

Gobi manchurian & fried rice
Manchurian
Veg Evenings Plate food, pocket moneyKhao Gali at Law Garden is where Ahmedabad's evening appetite goes Indo-Chinese: woks flaring over gas rings, gobi manchurian tossed glossy in garlic-soy, fried rice turned high in the air. It is vegetarian, unapologetically loud, and best eaten standing at the counter. Follow the biggest flame.

Grilled cheese sandwich
Shakti Sandwich
Veg Evenings Cheap enough to order a secondAhmedabad's street sandwich descends from the Bombay original — green chutney, butter, vegetables, a hot griddle — and then goes further, because this is Gujarat: more butter, more cheese, often grated over the top until the sandwich disappears. Shakti Sandwich is a Khao Gali stalwart; order the veg grill and eat it while the cheese is still melting.

Pani puri
Pani puri carts
Veg Evenings A plate at a time, pocket changeNo khau gali in Gujarat works without a pani puri cart, and Law Garden's are busiest just after sunset — puris cracked, filled to order and handed over one at a time until you say stop. Carts here keep both waters, so ask which is meetha and which is teekha before you commit to a plate.

Dabeli
Dabeli griddles
Veg Evenings Two make a meal, still street moneyThe dabeli came out of Kutch — a soft pav packed with sweet-spiced potato, pressed on a buttered griddle and finished with sev, roasted peanuts and pomegranate. In Ahmedabad it is everyday street food, and the Law Garden carts turn them out all evening. Eat it hot, while the sev still crunches.

Kulfi falooda
Kulfi & falooda counters
Veg Evenings Dessert at street pricesFinish at the kulfi counters: dense milk kulfi over a nest of falooda noodles and rose syrup, the dessert this stretch saves for last. It arrives already softening in the evening warmth — eat it faster than it melts.
A short history of this food
Law Garden's Khao Gali grew up in the 1980s and 90s alongside the evening handicraft market on the garden's edge — first a few sandwich and juice carts for shoppers, then a full lane of stalls as Ahmedabad's middle class made evening snacking a family ritual. Its menu is a map of Gujarati street taste: strictly vegetarian, generous with butter and cheese, and enthusiastically Indo-Chinese ever since the manchurian wave swept western India. It remains one of the city's favourite proofs that a dry state can still throw a nightly party.
Eat like a local
- Everything here is vegetarian — don't ask which stalls serve chicken; the answer is a citywide 'none of them'.
- Stalls peak between 7 and 11 pm; the busiest counter is the freshest one.
- Sharing plates across a group is the norm — order one of everything and circulate.
- Carts cluster tightly: collect your food, then step back from the counter to eat.
- Save room for a cold-cocoa or juice cart at the end — it's the traditional closer.
