Ahmedabad's old city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the way to see it is a walk that starts at seven in the morning. The heritage walk from Swaminarayan temple to Jama Masjid takes a couple of hours and goes through the pols — dense residential quarters, each historically one community, with shared courtyards, carved wooden facades and bird feeders on tall poles. Doing this without a guide means missing all of it, because the pols look like ordinary lanes from outside. The Sidi Saiyyed mosque's stone jaali — the tree-of-life screen — is the image the city is known for, and it takes five minutes to see. The Adalaj stepwell, half an hour out, takes longer and gives more. Gandhi's Sabarmati Ashram is plain and unglamorous by design. Sit in it for a while rather than walking through. Gujarat is a dry state; alcohol is not served. The city eats vegetarian extremely well as a result — the Gujarati thali here is one of India's great meals. November to February. April and May routinely pass forty-two degrees.

November to February is excellent, with cool and comfortable weather suited for navigating the dense historic walking quarters.

Why visit

Ahmedabad has the best stone carving in western India and the best-run heritage walk in the country, which leaves at eight in the morning from the Swaminarayan temple at Kalupur. Come for that, and for Manek Chowk after dark.

Cultural notes

Ahmedabad is known for its grand celebration of the International Kite Festival (Uttarayan) every January and the high-energy Navratri Garba celebrations that transform the city over nine nights in autumn.

Built in 1572-73 by Sidi Sayyad, a Habshi nobleman in the service of the Gujarat Sultanate, and a Monument of National Importance. Nobody comes for the mosque as a whole — they come for one window. The jali on the western wall is cut from a single slab into a tree with intertwined branches and palm fronds, and it has become the city's emblem: the Indian Institute of Management borrowed it for its logo and it turns up on everything from tea packets to shopfronts. It is a working mosque, so time a visit outside prayers.

Gandhi's home on the west bank of the Sabarmati, about six kilometres from the town hall, and the place he set out from on 12 March 1930 to walk to Dandi and break the salt law. He lived here and at Sevagram in Wardha for twelve years between travelling and prison, with Kasturba and followers including Vinoba Bhave; the Gita was recited daily as part of the day's routine. It is a national monument now — low buildings, a courtyard, his room kept as it was. Best in the morning, before the school groups.
