A short history

Construction began in 1715-1718 under Rao Godji I and was substantially completed under his son Deshalji I (reigned 1718-1741), with the fortification effort led by Diwan Devakaran Sheth. The British took control in 1819; the Indian Army held it after 1947 until vacating following the 2001 Bhuj earthquake, after which the Gujarat government took up restoration.
