What Leh & Ladakh is known for
Ladakh is the only part of India where the altitude is the main thing you have to plan around, and underestimating it is what ruins trips here. Leh is at 3,500 metres and most of the places worth going are higher. Fly in and you must give up the first two days to doing nothing — no trekking, no long drives, no alcohol. Come overland from Manali or Srinagar and you arrive acclimatised, which is the better way if you have the days. Beyond Leh: the Indus valley monasteries — Thiksey, Hemis, Alchi — are the substance of the place and can be done from town. Nubra and Pangong are further, need inner-line permits and long drives, and are worth an overnight each rather than a day trip. Zanskar is a serious undertaking on its own. The road season is roughly June to September. Outside that the passes close and the only way in or out is a flight, which weather cancels regularly. This is a high desert. It is cold at night in every month, the sun burns at this thinness of air, and there is almost no humidity — drink far more than you think you need.
Best time to visit
June to September, when the passes are clear and the highways in from Manali and Srinagar are open. Come overland if you can — you arrive acclimatised, which flying into Leh does not give you. Both roads close for winter and most of the region shuts with them.
