A short history

King Rudra Deo is credited by local tradition with establishing the fort in 1054 CE. Ancient seals in early Brahmi script, discovered during 1926-1927 excavations along the riverbank, have been dated to the 3rd-4th centuries CE. Surveyor Francis Buchanan visited the site in 1812 and recorded that only the southern side of the fort and bastions were still standing. By the time ASI founder Alexander Cunningham visited in 1871-1872, the site had deteriorated further. The Battle of Buxar was fought on 22-23 October 1764, when British East India Company forces under Major Hector Munro defeated an allied Indian coalition led by Mughal Emperor Shah Alam II, the Nawab of Bengal, and the Nawab of Awadh. The battle's aftermath was formalized in the 1765 Treaty of Allahabad, under which the defeated rulers granted the East India Company Diwani (revenue-collection) rights over Bengal, Bihar, and Orissa, widely regarded as marking the beginning of formal British political control in eastern India. Why Buxar Fort matters
