Ujjain, one of Hinduism's seven sacred Sapta Puri cities, is home to the Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga, famed for its unique Bhasma Aarti performed with sacred ash at dawn. An ancient city on the Shipra River, it is also one of the four sites of the Kumbh (Simhastha) Mela.

A short history

The Mahakaleshwar temple is referenced in the Puranas and by the Sanskrit poet Kalidasa, who lived in Ujjain; the city itself was a major seat of learning and astronomy in ancient India, giving its name to the Ujjain meridian used in classical Hindu astronomical calculations. The temple was destroyed by Iltutmish's forces in the 14th century and rebuilt in its current form by the Maratha general Ranoji Shinde in 1734.
