Asirgarh Fort is a roughly 60-acre, three-part fortress (Asirgarh, Kamargarh and Malaygarh) in the Satpura Range about 20-27 km north of Burhanpur, Madhya Pradesh, commanding a historically important pass between northern India and the Deccan.

A short history

The fort's origins are linked to the Tak Rajputs, who controlled the Nimar region from roughly the 9th to 13th centuries. From the 14th to 16th centuries the Faruqi dynasty of the Khandesh sultanate held Asirgarh. On 17 January 1601, Mughal emperor Akbar captured the fort after the reigning Khandesh ruler refused to submit to Mughal authority. During the Second Anglo-Maratha War, East India Company forces took the lower settlement on 18 October 1803, with the garrison surrendering by 21 October 1803. British forces again besieged and captured the fort on 9 April 1819, marking the final Maratha holdout and effectively ending the Third Anglo-Maratha War.
