Orchha Fort complex
Jahangir Mahal and Raj Mahal

heritage site · Madhya Pradesh
Orchha Fort complex sits on the banks of the Betwa River in Niwari District, Madhya Pradesh, founded by the Bundela Rajput ruler Rudra Pratap Singh; it comprises palaces including the Raj Mandir and Jahangir Mahal along with the Chaturbhuj Temple, part of a historic ensemble recognized toward UNESCO World Heritage status in 2020.
Orchha was established in 1531 by Rudra Pratap Singh (r. 1501-1531), the first king of the Bundela dynasty at Orchha. His successor Raja Madhukar Shah (r. 1554-1591) built the Raj Mandir palace. Queen Ganesh Kunwar commissioned the Chaturbhuj Temple, and local tradition holds that Lord Rama was installed as the eternal "King of Orchha," a distinction otherwise shared only with Ayodhya. The poet Keshavdas (1555-1617) lived at Orchha under the patronage of Raja Vir Singh Deo. In October 1635, Orchha was captured by imperial Mughal forces led by Prince Aurangzeb. Orchha Fort and its temple complex represent the pinnacle of Bundela Rajput architecture and are unique nationally for the tradition that installed Lord Rama as the ruling "King" of Orchha, a status shared only with Ayodhya.
