A short history

An inscription indicates Mandu was already a flourishing town by roughly the 6th century CE, gaining prominence under the Paramara dynasty in the 10th-11th centuries. In 1305, Alauddin Khalji's general captured Malwa, bringing the region under the Delhi Sultanate. Dilawar Khan Ghuri established an independent dynasty at Mandu after Timur's sack of Delhi (1401), and his successor Hoshang Shah shifted the capital from Dhar to Mandu, renaming it Shadiabad. Under the Khalji dynasty of Malwa (1436-1531), Ghiyas-ud-din built the Jahaz Mahal. The fort fell to Bahadur Shah of Gujarat in 1531, and Mughal emperor Humayun conquered Mandu in 1534. Later ruler Baz Bahadur was defeated by Akbar's generals in 1561; Rani Roopmati is said to have taken her own life on hearing of the fall of Mandu. In 1732 the Maratha Peshwa Baji Rao I captured Mandu. [Source: livehistoryindia.com/story/amazing-india/mandu-pride-of-malwa-sultans; Source: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malwa_Sultanate]

Why Mandu (Mandav) matters

As the former capital of the Malwa Sultanate, Mandu is one of India's best-preserved medieval fortified cities, celebrated for Indo-Islamic architecture including Hoshang Shah's Tomb and the Baz Bahadur-Rani Roopmati romance.

When to go

Why visit

Come in the monsoon, when the two lakes fill and Jahaz Mahal finally looks like the ship it is named for. Hoshang Shah's tomb here was the first marble building in India, and Shah Jahan sent his architects to study it before they began the Taj. The fat-trunked trees on the plateau are African baobabs, and nobody is sure how they got here.

Cultural notes

Mandu is tied to the romance of Sultan Baz Bahadur and the singer-queen Rani Roopmati, whose pavilion overlooks the Narmada valley.

How to reach

The nearest airport is at Indore (about 90-100 km away); Mandu is reached by road via Dhar, roughly 35 km from Dhar city.
