Chapora Fort is known for
A short history
The fort was originally built by the Bijapur Sultanate ruler Adil Shah over an earlier military outpost, known as "Shahapura," a name the Portuguese later altered to Chapora. After defeating the Adil Shahi forces, the Portuguese held the site as a boundary marker on their northern frontier. In 1683 the Marathas used the fort as a base camp to challenge Portuguese authority, capturing it again in 1684 and 1739. In 1717 the Portuguese carried out extensive renovations, adding bastions and an escape tunnel connecting the fort to the river. The Portuguese reacquired the fort in 1741 and completely abandoned it by 1892. [Source: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chapora_Fort]
