Deoghar, the 'abode of the gods', is home to the Baidyanath Jyotirlinga, one of the twelve sacred Jyotirlingas of Shiva. During the monsoon month of Shravan, millions of saffron-clad kanwariyas walk over 100 km carrying Ganga water from Sultanganj to offer at the temple — one of India's largest pilgrim movements.

When to go

Best visited October to March, though hill shrines may open only May-October.

Why visit

A major Jyotirlinga and the heart of the vast Shravani Mela kanwar pilgrimage, when millions walk with Ganga water.

Cultural notes

Baidyanath is both a Jyotirlinga and counted by some traditions among the Shakti Peethas, making Deoghar doubly sacred and the focus of the month-long Shravani Mela.

How to reach

Deoghar has an airport and railway station; well connected by road. A Jyotirlinga and a major Shravan pilgrimage destination.
