A short history

The fort was built between 1178 and 1209 CE by Shilahara ruler Bhoja II. Control later passed to the Yadavas, the Bahmani Sultanate, and the Adilshahis of Bijapur, who fortified it extensively from 1489. In 1659, Shivaji Maharaj captured the fort following the death of Bijapur general Afzal Khan, but in May 1660 the Adilshahi ruler laid siege to it. After five months, on 13 July 1660, Shivaji escaped under cover of a distraction led by commander Baji Prabhu Deshpande, an episode that became the Battle of Pavan Khind. Shivaji permanently reclaimed the fort in 1673. Tarabai, widow of Rajaram, later used it as her headquarters as regent. The seat of government moved from Panhala to Kolhapur in 1782, and the fort passed to British control by 1827. In 2025, Panhala was inscribed as one of twelve component forts of the "Maratha Military Landscapes of India" UNESCO World Heritage Site. [Source: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panhala_Fort]
