A short history

Shivaji Maharaj assigned his prime minister Moropant Trimbak Pingle to build the fort, which was completed in 1656 to defend the banks of the Nira and Koyna rivers and the Par mountain pass. On 10 November 1659, the Battle of Pratapgad took place there between Shivaji and Afzal Khan, a general of the Adil Shahi (Bijapur) dynasty, marking the first major military test of Shivaji's young kingdom and ending in a decisive Maratha victory. On 30 November 1957, a bronze equestrian statue of Shivaji Maharaj was unveiled at the fort by Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. In 2025, Pratapgad was inscribed as one of twelve component forts of the "Maratha Military Landscapes of India" UNESCO World Heritage Site. [Source: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pratapgad]
