Vasai (Bassein) Fort was the Portuguese capital of the north for two centuries — a walled city of cathedrals, convents and palaces guarding the creek north of Mumbai. Chimaji Appa's Maratha campaign finally took it in 1739 after one of the bloodiest sieges of the age. Today its arches, church facades and watchtowers stand tangled in banyan and palm, a vast romantic ruin that film crews and history walkers share with fishing families.
