Significance

The Punjabi harvest festival and Sikh New Year, marking the founding of the Khalsa in 1699. Celebrated with Bhangra and Gidda dances, fairs, and gurudwara prayers.

Why it's celebrated

In 1699, the tenth Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh, summoned a massive gathering to combat Mughal oppression. On this day, he established the Khalsa Panth, creating a community of saint-soldiers bound by discipline and equality.

How it's celebrated

Celebrated with monumental energy. Devotees visit Gurdwaras for prayers. The agricultural roots are honored through high-energy Bhangra and Gidda folk dances performed to the heavy beats of the dhol drum.

Key rituals

Features the completion of the continuous reading of the Guru Granth Sahib. The streets vibrate with massive, colorful processions led by the Panj Piyare carrying the Sikh flag.

Beliefs & spiritual meaning

Emphasizes the absolute equality of all humans regardless of caste or creed, visibly reinforced through the massive operation of the Langar, the free community kitchen.

History & origins

Evolved from an ancient Hindu solar new year and harvest festival into the pivotal historical milestone of the Sikh religion following the events of 1699.

Tips for travellers

Visit the Golden Temple for the most authentic experience. Covering your head and removing shoes is strictly mandatory in all Gurdwaras. Join the communal Langar.

What to expect

Baisakhi is a high-octane celebration marked by seas of saffron and golden-yellow. The air resonates with the rhythmic thumping of dhol drums and spirited chants. Grand street processions feature thrilling displays of sword-fighting and martial arts. Inside the Gurdwaras, the atmosphere is profoundly peaceful and egalitarian, with thousands sitting cross-legged on the floor, sharing a simple, delicious meal from the free community kitchen.
