Kerala's harvest festival welcoming the mythical King Mahabali. Celebrated with flower carpets (pookalam), the grand Onasadya feast, Vallamkali snake-boat races and Pulikali tiger dances.

According to mythology, King Mahabali's golden reign was so perfect that it challenged the gods. Lord Vishnu took the Vamana avatar to test him, granting him a boon to visit his beloved subjects once every year.

Homes are decorated with complex flower carpets (Pookalam). People wear traditional attire (Kasavu sarees and mundus), prepare an epic vegetarian feast (Onam Sadya), and watch energetic snake boat races (Vallam Kali).

Designing the Pookalam starting with small designs on day one (Atham) and expanding it daily until day ten (Thiruvonam). Trikkakara Appan (clay statues representing Vamana) are installed in courtyards.

It is believed that the spirit of King Mahabali visits every home. People ensure their houses are clean, beautifully decorated, and filled with joy to show their legendary ruler that they remain happy and prosperous.

Traced back over a millennium through stone inscriptions and classical Tamil poetry, it evolved from an agrarian festival into a culturally unifying symbol of Keralite identity.

Onam turns the lush green landscape of Kerala into a bright celebration of culture. Front yards are filled with the bright colors of fresh flower carpets, while local kitchens fill with the rich aroma of coconut and spices cooking for the grand feast. The exciting rhythms of Pulikali tiger dancers and the thunderous cheers along the river banks during boat races capture the deep joy and unity of the community.
