The Champaner-Pavagadh Archaeological Park in Gujarat is a UNESCO World Heritage Site blending a hill of ancient Hindu and Jain temples on Pavagadh with the ruins of the medieval city of Champaner below. Its mosques, step-wells, fortifications and the hilltop Kalika Mata temple make it a rare, continuous record of pre-Mughal Hindu and Sultanate architecture.

When to go

October to March has the most pleasant weather; the Pavagadh temple draws large crowds during Navratri.

Why visit

UNESCO-listed, and the half nobody visits is the better half. The mosques on the plain — Jama Masjid above all — are among the finest Sultanate buildings in India and you will often have them to yourself while the crowd heads straight up the hill.

Cultural notes

Champaner briefly served as the capital of Sultan Mahmud Begada in the late 15th century, and the site uniquely preserves a city from the pre-Mughal period.

How to reach

By Road: Champaner is about 45 km from Vadodara, an easy day trip by taxi. By Air and Train: Vadodara has the nearest airport and major railway station.
