Patnitop is a plateau at 2,024 metres above the Chenab on the Jammu–Srinagar highway, and almost everyone who stops there was on the way somewhere else. As a stop it works well. Deodar forest, open meadows and easy walking — this is not a trekking destination and does not pretend to be. The Skyview gondola at Sanasar runs 2.8 kilometres across the gorge and is the one thing here worth a detour on its own. Snow falls for a few weeks in January and February and the place fills up for it. The rest of winter it is cold and empty. March to June and September to November. Avoid the monsoon, when the highway below is prone to landslides and closures.

When to go

The ideal months to visit Patnitop are from May to June for cool summers, and January for winter snow experiences.

Why visit

Patnitop is a stop on the Jammu–Srinagar highway rather than somewhere people set out for, and it works well as one: deodar forest, a gondola up from Sanasar, and a few weeks of snow in winter.

Cultural notes

Originally named 'Patan Da Talab', translating to the 'Pond of the Princess', the location historically featured a natural clear water pool where royal princesses from regional hill kingdoms would bathe during summer excursions. It preserves a distinct, centuries-old wooden Naag Temple.

How to reach

The closest airport is Jammu Airport, located 110 km away. The nearest broad-gauge rail hub is at Udhampur (44 km). Patnitop is excellently connected via the four-lane National Highway 44, with vehicles passing smoothly through the landmark engineering marvel of the Chenani-Nashri Tunnel.
