Lachung is a mountain village in North Sikkim at around 2,700 metres, set where the Lachen and Lachung rivers meet amid apple orchards and waterfalls. Home to the Lepcha and Bhutia communities and the century-old Lachung Monastery, it is the main gateway to the flower-filled Yumthang Valley.

When to go

March to May brings rhododendron blooms, and April to June and October to November are ideal; winter can see snow.

Lachung is governed in part by the traditional Dzumsa self-governance system and preserves Lepcha and Bhutia Buddhist culture.

How to reach

By Road: Lachung is reached from Gangtok, roughly 115 km on mountain roads, usually as part of a permit-based North Sikkim tour. By Air and Train: Bagdogra airport and New Jalpaiguri railway station near Siliguri are the nearest major gateways.
